What We Do
Now everyone can enjoy More Than Schools
There’s a whole lot more going on in the schools of Winchester and Swanmore – and you don’t have to be young to enjoy the result.
Extended Services is a government initiative to encourage schools to provide more than just formal education. In this area, it’s called More Than Schools and involves Westgate, King’s, Henry Beaufort and Swanmore secondary schools, all their feeder primary schools and two special schools. That’s 35 schools in all. (For details about what each school is currently offering please see the drop down ‘Schools’ list above)
Following a national pilot study, the number of pupils gaining five good GCSEs rose at Extended Schools by 5% compared to the overall average of 2.5%.
An extended school works with the local council, voluntary sector organisations and others to offer access to a range of services and activities which support and motivate children and young people to achieve their full potential. These services and activities come under five headings:
- Quality Childcare;
- A wide range of Activities;
- Support for Parents;
- Swift & Easy access to specialist services and
- Community Access to school facilities.
(for details please access the links on the left of this page).
In Winchester and Swanmore, the scheme is being managed by the YMCA, which has a long and proud history of working with local schools and children.
